Almost Ours

You never called it love

I never called it off

Coffee for two but only on your terms

Every time you leave, the same old lesson burns

Good morning texts that vanish by the night

You light me up but never stay for the light

My friends all ask me what we really are

I shrug and say we're somewhere near a star

Half a promise in a half-lit room

You bloom in spring and then you leave in June

Don't say sorry, don't say stay

You were always halfway

We were almost, almost ours

Counting maybe under borrowed stars

You held my hand but never held the weight

Almost ours, but almost came too late

Saw your story with a brand new smile

Funny how you never stayed with mine a while

Deleted all the photos, kept the songs

Guess I'm still deciding where my heart belongs

And if you ask me now

I'd still say yes somehow

We were almost, almost ours

Counting maybe under borrowed stars

You held my hand but never held the weight

Almost ours, but almost came too late

Almost ours

Almost ours
